Coined two centuries ago, the term "electrocution" refers to death from electricity. Electric shock, ​on the other hand, is an electrical injury that does not result in death. Both can have severe ​consequences, including amputations, burns, heart problems, brain damage, and more.

Common Causes and Injuries

Electrical injuries are often caused by accidental contact with exposed electrical sources, faulty ​wiring, lightning strikes, or defective electrical products.

Indoor Electric Injuries

• If someone comes into contact with low-voltage electricity indoors, do not touch them.
  
• Attempt to switch off the power if possible.
  
• If you can't shut off the power, use a non-conductive material like dry wood, rope, or a broom ​handle to separate the person from the current.#
  

Outdoor Electric Injuries

• High-voltage electricity poses a greater risk.
  
• Call the power company immediately and emergency medical services. Do not touch the person ​or move them away.
  

After Separation

• Check for breathing. If absent, begin CPR.
  
• Treat for shock: Keep the victim lying down and covered to maintain body heat. If unconscious, ​place them on their side.
  
• Avoid movement: If you suspect a spinal or neck injury, do not move the victim.
  
• Treat burns: Irrigate electrical burns with cold water while awaiting medical help.
